The landscape of warning dissemination has changed considerably over the last decade due to advances in forecasting, technology, evolving use of the Internet, the advent and dependence on mobile devices, the social consumption habits of information, info-seeking behavior, social media usage, and the interconnected emergency management cycles for decision-making at the state and local levels. As counties, cities, states seek to improve response and services, they are looking for quick, reliable, easily deployable alerting solutions. Likewise, individuals seek more information to know what's happening and what recommended protective actions and behaviors are needed for safety. They want timely, accurate, and relevant information. They want to know when and where an event is supposed to occur, as well as how serious it will be. Research has shown to meet the informational needs of both emergency managers/emergency decision-makers and the public at-large, there is a need for multiple warning modalities. All modalities should be given the chance to reach the end-user and each modality provides much needed secondary confirmation and additional details that may not be associated with only one modality. This presentation discusses the results of a national study of warning modality usage, functionality, and applications.
