Abstract:

On December 7th and 8th, 2017, the Houston area saw up to 3&rdquo of snowfall. While Houston had seen measureable snow 37 times prior to this event since records began in 1895, the December 2017 event led to the highest snow totals in the city in 50 years. Additionally, it was Houston's earliest measureable snowfall event on record.

There is a typical meteorological pattern that can lead to Gulf Coast snow events. These synoptic patterns, as well as data from dual-pol radar and upper-air soundings launched from the University of Houston, are analyzed in order to better understand the variables that contributed to this event.
