How Diversity Affects Feedback: Navigating the Gender Gap from Viewer Comments to Workplace Discussions
Hannah Sankey (on-air Hannah Strong): WDRB-TV, Louisville, KY
Many of our NWA meteorologists participated and encouraged each other with the #MoreThanABabe campaign in recent weeks. Why is it necessary to explain why women are more than eye candy? What can all meteorologists - men and women, broadcast and operational - do to better support each other in striving for equality? What are social media best practices in dealing with discrimination or sexual harassment from viewers/the public? What other communities - LGBTQ, African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, etc. - are similarly marginalized by viewers and how do we as a community respond?
This presentation will demonstrate to the entire community that diversity affects how the public deals with each of us differently. Specifically this will focus on the harassing comments women receive without provocation and how to respond with mentions of how this similarly affects other communities. Responses will focus both on how the receiver can respond wisely and helpfully and how everyone else in the meteorological community can respond in support of the marginalized whether responding directly to something or simply posting more educated comments.
