Abstract:

National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) have been encouraged to develop a robust social media presence to deliver weather, water, and climate information to a wide audience. WFO St. Louis has an official account on Twitter, which is a widely used microblogging platform and information network. Staff members noticed that Twitter users seemed to interact with the office's account (@NWSStLouis) more (or less) on certain days of the week and at certain times of the day. Informal discussions among staff members led to a more detailed analysis of the office's recent Twitter activity to see if the data set supported these anecdotal observations. This poster will explore some of the results of this analysis as well as initial steps which have already been taken to apply these insights towards building the office's social media presence.
