NOAA's Joint Polar Satellite System's Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Program – PGRR Initiatives as the Foundation for Assisting Decision Makers in responding to Severe Weather Events! (243)

Abstract:

This presentation will focus specific actions taken by NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program's Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) projects in response to real-world environmental events. PGRR Initiatives have proven to be invaluable forums for JPSS Program personnel to meet with NOAA Line Office subject matter experts, and representatives from federal, state, and local agencies to evaluate JPSS capabilities and how they can be effectively used in response to disasters. Here are several examples. The Fire and Smoke Initiative Team Members have continued to work with various smoke models, such as the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) Model, to assimilate the VIIRS Fire Radiative Power product to assist in providing accurate initial conditions for model execution. The HRRR Smoke Model was used extensively to forecast smoke from the major fires in the US Western Region in late 2017. Members of the JPSS Sounding Team participated in the NOAA Satellite Conference to show users the value of these satellite soundings in response to massive fires in Chile in January 2017. The JPSS River Flood product was considered a critical input to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria in 2017. Information on additional JPSS Initiatives will be provided.
