Abstract:

The weather enterprise community has more mobile device users than ever, who are increasingly comfortable with the latest technologies but, entrenched communications gaps between meteorologist and user remain. Users need help locating themselves on a map. They request direct suggestions, advice, and concrete lists on what they should actually DO when there is a weather threat. Location-based augmented reality (AR) can bridge both gaps, along with a suite of emerging communications tools, within one broadcasting product.

In the public's interest, during both calm and threatening weather, we want to harness the latest technologies into one communications product for a meteorologist to use that increases audience engagement and decreases miscommunication. Users crave authenticity while seeking education, expertise, and engaging conversation that steers products toward their forecast needs. However, they have shorter attention spans.

Starting a 2-way dialog while we broadcast from our mobile device, meteorologists can query users to involve them directly. Holding their attention. Adding in AR, we can now demonstrably show expected weather&mdashnot just tell or narrate it while displaying a graphical map overlay. AR can display an education topic and the on-screen, live meteorologist can interact with the topic. Upcoming weather can be overlain onto a user's surroundings, using their device's location services, as they aim their phone at the ceiling (&ldquoportal&rdquo) to see weather outside that's in the forecast. AR can also toggle to &ldquoimpact&rdquo the live, broadcasting meteorologist who's on the same screen narrating the region's synoptic pattern. Users see the weather and the impact it is having. During extreme weather forecasts, a tornado, hurricane, or flood can be displayed impacting the very structure in which the user is residing. Concurrently, the meteorologist can display a list of actions and even illuminate an evacuation route on the road outside their home, for the user to consider utilizing.

Engaging users and offering them this augmented reality layer should keep broadcasts fresh, applicable, adaptive, attention-worthy, and driven by users themselves. Users will know where to turn for weather education during stable weather and where to turn for recommended actions needed during serious weather.
