Wind Microclimates and Their Impact On Weather Analysis, Forecasting and Decision Support (328)

Although much focus on microclimates is on temperature and precipitation, wind is another meteorological element that does have small scale variance. Wind speed and direction can vary considerably in even a distance of a few feet due to exposure, local infrastructure and terrain. However, many forecasters often issue forecasts and provide decision support of wind elements based on values obtained at an exact point. In reality, these conditions can often be unrepresentative of conditions in a general area such as at an airport, at an event such as a festival or even in a residential neighborhood. Siting of instruments and an understanding of the impact on the values obtained by the wind measuring equipment used is crucial to providing better meteorological support and examples of this will be shown. In addition, a look at some possible improvements to how decision support in real-time could be improved with observational data will be discussed. Examples of past cases of wind microclimates will be shown from the author's time spent as a forecaster in Las Vegas and New York.
