I’m excited! I can’t think of any other way to describe my feelings regarding the annual meeting this September in Irving. Our Board recently held its new year meeting in Texas and had a chance to tour the Irving Convention Center, the space we will be utilizing as we gather with friends and colleagues in an exchange of information and ideas. I’ve posted several photos on Community so you can look at our home from September 14-18. And check out our website for a video tour and anything you need to know about the annual meeting.
We can tell you may be getting excited too! Our call for workshop and session submissions was overwhelmingly positive. We’re continuing our method of providing you with opportunities to dive deeper into important information with our workshop and session set-up, catering to your feedback from our Kansas City meeting. This years’ meeting co chairs, Ashley Morris and Matt Solum, have been hard at work playing a sort of Tetris with our agenda so it’s a solid fit for you. They need your help to finish the puzzle! Abstract submissions are now open and we’re hoping you will join us in sharing presentations that help the weather enterprise refine, refresh, and refocus. More information about the Call for Abstracts is in this newsletter.
Refine: How the Weather Enterprise can come together and grow in diversity, knowledge, and technology to improve weather services.
Refresh: How do we innovate while increasing collaboration within the Weather Enterprise and with the communities we serve.
Refocus: How the NWA community can refocus on current weather-related challenges and look to prepare for additional challenges in the future.
Are you looking for ways to get more involved in the National Weather Association? There are many opportunities you may not be aware of, so be sure to check out the volunteer form and find a fit for you. THANK YOU to everyone who has filled out a form. We are also looking for new members. If you know of someone interested in weather, we would love to connect!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding anything NWA, please reach out to president@nwas.org.

February is Black History Month
|
Blackhistorymonth.gov published an article excerpted from an essay by Daryl Michael Scott, at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The buttons below link to the blackhistorymonth.gov and the ASALH.
"As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, like W. E. B. Du Bois before him, believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African American's contributions to civilization was realized when he and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925. The event was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The response was overwhelming: Black history clubs sprang up; teachers demanded materials to instruct their pupils; and progressive whites, not simply white scholars and philanthropists, stepped forward to endorse the effort.
By the time of Woodson's death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life and substantial progress had been made in bringing more Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid–century, mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting Negro History Week. The Black Awakening of the 1960s dramatically expanded the consciousness of African Americans about the importance of black history, and the Civil Rights movement focused Americans of all colors on the subject of the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture.
The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation's bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first Black History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued Black History Month proclamations. And the association—now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—continues to promote the study of Black history all year."
