On our website, we have pricing for most Navajo rugs posted. If a price is not visible, it is either part of our exclusive Navajo Churro Collection, or is one of our more important and valuable Antique or Contemporary Navajo Rugs. We are happy to provide pricing for any these pieces. When I saw that a 19th century antique Navajo blanket was sold in an auction for – $1,800,000 – my eyebrow immediately shot upwards to my hairline. “What?!” I thought to myself – or perhaps I even spoke it aloud. “How could that sell for so much money?! ” It was an ordinary blanket, hardly more elegant or interesting than the most mundane Moroccan here in our gallery.

During the last two decades of the 19th century, most Navajo blankets were woven of spongy, loosely spun yarns most frequently dyed with aniline reds, oranges and yellows.

This design is not common, however. It shows the increasing intrusion by the outside on Navajo culture as well as their art. Notice the partial borders around the four corners. Bordered textiles were a popular design at that time. They were inspired by intricate Oriental rugs. They were used because the weavers probably had photos of the rugs and copied them. Borders were however inconsistent with Native Americans inherit design. Their creations were believed be connected to their spirituality, so they should be shared. Borders, acting as a border, hindered spirituality. A Spider Woman's Hole was also incorporated into the solution. The Spider Woman's Hole a small slit that runs through the blanket's design space, is named in honor of the woman who, legend has it, taught the Navajos to weave. The hole acts like a spirit line and allows the design energies that went into the piece to be redirected into the wider world.

Navajo rugs have no ridges at the ends. Someone may attempt to pass a rug off Navajo or make it more Navajo by running the warps into the rug. This creates ridges at its ends. The doubled up warps can be seen if the weft yarns are separated slightly. I'll post a photo of the next good example I see. This is very common in Ye'i rug replicas that are made in Mexico.

Navajo rugs stand out among all the rugs with a high price tag. Navajo rugs are expensive. First, they are rich in history. You will also notice that these rugs exhibit excellent craftsmanship. Finally, we can see the type and method of weaving used by the weaver to create these rugs. They are far more durable than any other rug on market.
