Their creations were considered to be linked with their spirituality, something that should be shared. Borders acted as a limit and hindered the spirituality within the design. It was decided to include a rare feature, the Spider Woman's Hole. The Spider Woman's Hole - a small slit in blanket's design field - is named after the woman that, according to legend, taught the Navajo weave. The hole acts as a kind of spiritline that lets the design energy in the piece return to the rest of the world. People who love to decorate with rugs of various types and designs might be familiar with the Navajo rugs. These rugs have been handcrafted by the finest rug weavers and are authentic. You'll often find museums that hold auctions to buy Navajo rugs from the past at a steep price. So why is that? Why is Navajo rugs much more expensive that other types of rugs.

Wool is the standard material used in the making of a Navajo rug. There are a few genuine Navajo rugs made using synthetic materials such as acrylic. If encountering one, it could be looked at as the result of a Navajo woman weaving her own cheap knock-off. In such case, it probably doesn't matter is it is real or not. The imitators may use wool but there are poor fakes made in Mexico that use polyester. Some fakes made in India or Pakistan use a blend of wool and polyester or acrylic. Contrary to another author, sniffing the rug to determine if the rug is made from wool is not useful. Much of the wool use in contemporary Navajo rugs has very little lanolin and doesn't smell at all. Older rugs may have been cleaned or have acquired other odors. It is comic to watch a potential buyer go through a store's inventory sniffing the rugs. A buyer should learn to distinguish the look and feel of wool from other materials. While there are more scientific means of testing for wool, they are usually not practical in the context of purchasing a rug from a store or Indian arts dealer.

Getting a Navajo rug may seem daunting, but the process is actually easy. Several online retailers have online galleries featuring Navajo rugs. If you’d like to view them in person, you’ll have to visit a store in Navajo country. You’ll need a reservation, which means you’ll need to make sure that you can visit Navajo homes.

Motifs probably derived from oriental rugs include repeated hook shapes (often called “latch hooks”), the “waterbug” shaped like an “X” with a bar through the middle, the “airplane” or T-shape with rounded ends and, in a small number of weavings, rosettes. An even more lasting and fundamental influence was the concept of a large central motif in one, two or three parts that covers almost all of the ground between the borders. Even the concept of the border itself, usually in two or three layers with at least one in a geometric pattern, is probably traceable to oriental carpet design. Though introduced in the regional around Crystal, these motifs and ideas quickly spread to other areas of the Reservation and are found on many rugs woven throughout the past century.

Zapotec, and other Mexican knockoffs, often have large end borders and cords. These are usually added after the rug has been woven. As described above, the warp ends should be buried alongside the adjacent cut ends. Many knock-offs use designs from books or photos. The Zapotec is the largest manufacturer of fake Navajo rugs. Teotitlan de Valle is home to many Zapotec rugs. They produce the most convincing and high-quality fakes. Rugs woven by Ukraine are good replicas of Navajo rug design. Side selvages will have bundled warps, and the ends will be well-hand serged. These rugs can be flatwoven rugs in Navajo or Southwest style. They are unfortunately often sold in Indian arts shops as genuine rugs.

Finally, you will see a Zapotec rugs at the right. You can see the fringe at bottom. This is the rug most often confused for a Navajo weaving. The yarns used in these rugs are often hand spun, hand-dyed, and require a lot skill. The colors are not Navajo and the pattern is smaller than what you would see in a typical Navajo piece. I offer a $20-50 per-item identification service if you require assistance in identifying a textile. Click here to send me information regarding the textile you're interested in. The Eyedazzler would be the name that the weaver would have used. There might also be some who call it an eyedazzler.

If there is a bundle of warps at the edge of each side, then it is unlikely that the rug is genuine. Very few Navajo rugs will have such bundles and even then there would be only two or three warp threads that would make up that bundle and there would be only a single warp thread next to that bundle. Most Navajo rugs have side cords as I described and virtually no Navajo rugs have warp thread fringe at both ends.
