It is not likely that the rug is authenticated if there is a bundle or warps along the edges. There are very few Navajo rugs that have such bundles. And even then, only two or three of the warp threads would make up that bundle. Additionally, only one warp string would be placed next to that bundle. Many Navajo rugs come with side cords. Navajo rugs may have what Indian dealers call "lazylines." It is an inaccurate, insulting term and I hope that it will be replaced soon by the "Section Line." A section line or diagonal joint in the weave is where a weaver can work on a single section of the rug. She weaves a section, then switches to weaving another. This creates the diagonal part line. However, not all Navajo rugs include section lines.

These are pictorial rugs that show ceremonial sandpaintings. They are square and can contain supernatural figures with magical trappings. They can also include common elements such as snakes, feathers, lizards, and whirling logs. Because these rugs are sacred, only a few Navajo weavers arewilling or able to produce them. To protect these individuals from spiritualharm, special ceremonial sings must be conducted. These rugs are very rare and thus very valuable and are producedin the Two Grey Hillsand Shiprock areas.

Most Navajo rugs lack a fringe. 99.5% is the most common. If you notice fringe on the piece, ask the seller how they came to determine that it was Navajo. I don't care if their grandmother believed that J. L. Hubbell bought the rug. It's likely that it's not Navajo. Navajo rugs use a continuous figure eight weaving technique. This is a picture of a rug being weaved. You can see these loops at the ends if Navajo rugs are closely examined.

A great way to determine the authenticity and quality of your Native American Rug are to examine its characteristics. You can check for short corner ties between the end cords or selvage. It is the best way for your rugs to be authentic than buying authentic ones. You can also visit Indian Arts and Crafts Board's website to learn more about rugs and similar artifacts. Navajo rugs lack ridges in the ends. Some people will attempt to pass a rug as Navajo. If you pull the weft yarns apart slightly, you will see the doubled up Warps. This will be the next time I come across a good example. I'll take a picture. This is common in Ye’i rug imitations that are made from Mexico.

Patterns were, and still are, plotted in the weaver's mind - to create an harmonious design requires artistic ability as well as multidimensional thinking. All Navajo weaves are meticulously handcrafted. As is traditional, the weaving was done by the weaver's relatives. The family took care of the sheep. Early Navajo weavings featured special wool made from Churro sheep, a breed known for its long, silky fibres. Later, when the Navajo became interested in making rugs they added other sheep breeds to their flock. After shearing the sheep the wool is cleaned, sorted and spun by hands. Even today, Navajo sheavers don't use spinning wheel; instead, the wool is stretched and twisted onto a spundle by hand. The blanket is then woven by hand on the unique Navajo loom.

Yebechais have more human proportions, usually face sideways, and have legs bent in a dancing motion. The most common types of Yei and Yeibechai rugs feature multiple figures oriented parallel with the weft threads so that the rug appears wider than long when the figures are upright. Two distinct styles emerged in the 1920s. Those made in the area of Shiprock, New Mexico tend to have light colored backgrounds with no border, and often use brightly colored commercial yarns. Yeis and Yeibechais made in the central part of the reservation (northeastern Arizona) tend to have dark backgrounds with simple borders.
