Navajo rugs have no ridges at the ends. Someone may attempt to pass a rug off Navajo or make it more Navajo by running the warps into the rug. This creates ridges at its ends. The doubled up warps can be seen if the weft yarns are separated slightly. I'll post a photo of the next good example I see. This is very common in Ye'i rug replicas that are made in Mexico.

Navajo rugs stand out among all the rugs with a high price tag. Navajo rugs are expensive. First, they are rich in history. You will also notice that these rugs exhibit excellent craftsmanship. Finally, we can see the type and method of weaving used by the weaver to create these rugs. They are far more durable than any other rug on market.

The Chinle style came before theother 2 banded styles. This was a revival of the borderless and banded designsof the Early Classic Period of Navajo weaving. Aniline dyes of red and blackare used for highlights. They have muted pastels with natural greys, whites, golds, and greens. Occasionally they may also have bright and bold black, white, and red. The Chinle style originated in the town of Chinle but is now woven everywhere in theNavajo nation. Because of its simplicity, it takes less time to weave and istherefore one of the most commonly woven rugs.

The Navajo returned from Bosque Redondo to a very different world; one increasingly tied to the larger Anglo-American economy and culture. Families quickly rebuilt their sheep herds and resumed production of their own hand-spun yarns, although the Churro sheep had been replaced by American Merino sheep which had shorter, greasier wool that was much harder to clean and spin by hand. Weavers also found that the market for their blankets was changing rapidly. The trading post system and its ties to the railroad brought relatively cheap manufactured clothing and supplies to the Navajo and surrounding tribes. Anglo-style coats and dresses were replacing wearing blankets as the clothing of choice among Native peoples.

Burntwater, another center of vegetal dye weaving near Wide Ruins, has given its name to a distinctive rug type which combines the bordered, central geometric designs of modern Ganado and Two Grey Hills rugs with bright pastel, vegetal colors. Weavings that incorporate images of objects and people in their designs have slowly gained in popularity since the early days of rug-making. Such Pictorial Rugs may include small representational images within a larger geometric design, or may consist primarily-even solely-of a picture. Small pictorial motifs such as feathers, arrows, animals and other common objects may have held some personal significance for the individual weaver.

Navajo rugs often have what Indian art dealers refer to as "lazy lines". It is an insulting and inaccurate term that will soon be replaced by "Section Line." A section line is a line that a weaver uses to work on one section of a rug, and not the entire rug. She weaves one section and then weaves another. This creates the diagonal line. Section lines are not common in all Navajo rugs. The border at the end of Mexican imitation Navajo rugs is generally wider than those in a real Navajo rug. Side borders can also be wider.
